Before the Parliament of Barbados is the Integrity in Public Life Bill. The UPP was requested by the Parliament to submit its comments. If Barbados can actually pass this legislation in both houses and proclaim it, it would be a step in the right direction. Currently corruption is having a negative impact on the economy causing it to stagnate by limiting competitiveness including the exclusion of new actors. The Bill however has some deficiencies and some areas which can be seen as loop holes. Barbados must also implement complementary legislation such as the Freedom of Information Act. Barbados must also ensure that it has the ability to trace all assets which are the proceeds of crime and confiscate them.
